The Greenwich Line is a short link between London Bridge Station and the North Kent Line in London . The trains on the route are operated by the Southeastern .
history
In 1833 the UK Parliament approved a route from London to Greenwich. A continuous route to Dover was specified as the destination, but this failed due to financing problems. The line was opened as the first railway line in London under the wing of the London and Greenwich Railway . The first section between the now closed Spa Road stop and Deptford was put into operation on February 8, 1836 , although test trains had already been running since mid-1835. On December 14, 1836, the tracks reached London Bridge and on December 24, 1838 the line was extended to the provisional terminus at Church Row in Greenwich. The current Greenwich station was then put into operation on April 12, 1840.
In 1873 the Maze Hill - Charlton section was put into operation as a branch of the North Kent Line, followed five years later by the Maze Hill - Greenwich tunnel via a tunnel that crosses under the National Maritime Museum . The reason Greenwich stayed on for 40 years was a dispute with Greenwich Hospital over the route.
In 1879 the Westcombe Park station was opened .
In 1926, the line was electrified along with other lines as part of the electrification of the route London - Dartford with a direct voltage of 750 volts by conductor rail.
