biography

After graduating from the University of Warwick in 1971, he worked for various publications, including the specialist magazines Marketing and Retail Newsagent and the London local newspaper Hampstead and Highgate Express . He later worked for the political weekly New Statesman and the short-lived London Daily News . From 1989 to 1997 he was on the editorial board of The Independent . During this time he was the transport correspondent for four years from 1992 onwards and published numerous articles critical of the privatization of the British railways by the cabinet of John Major .

In addition to columns for other newspapers and articles for railway journals, Wolmar wrote several books on the current state of the British railways from 1996 onwards. He developed into one of the fiercest critics of rail privatization and spread his views on numerous radio and television programs. Several times he spoke out against the construction of High Speed 2 , a planned high-speed route between London and Birmingham . In 2000 he published a book about abuse scandals in children's homes, and he also wrote frequently about the precarious housing situation and corruption scandals in city administrations.

In September 2012 he announced that he would seek nomination as a Labor Party candidate for the election of the Mayor of London in 2016. Although he was not nominated for this, the party named him on November 5, 2016 as its candidate for the by-election in the constituency of Richmond Park , which had become necessary due to the resignation of the previous Conservative MP Zac Goldsmith. In the by-election, he received 1,515 votes and landed far behind the re-running Goldsmith and the Liberal Democrats candidate and winner Sarah Olney .

Wolmar, who plays cricket and participates in running events in his spare time , is an avid soccer fan and has been a supporter of the Queens Park Rangers since his youth.
