The Haymarket railway station (Gaelic: Margadh to Fheòir ), officially and in all schedules only Haymarket called, is a long-distance and regional train station in the Scottish capital Edinburgh , the second largest after the main train station , Waverley Station . It is located in the district of the same name at the western end of Shandwick Place . In 2009 it was frequented by 1.845 million travelers.
history
Edinburgh Haymarket Railway Station is on the western edge of the city center. It was in 1842, first as head station built and terminus of the line from Glasgow, now a branch of the West Coast Main Line . In 1846 the Haymarket Tunnel was opened, connecting to Waverley Station and turning Edinburgh Haymarket Station into a through station . The station is now in the category A of the listed building under monument protection .
In 2006, in addition to the two continuous central platforms, a head platform with an entrance from the west was built, and in 2010 the passenger lifts were expanded to equip the platforms with disabled access. The station is operated by Abellio ScotRail .

The station has five platform tracks. Track 0 is the subsequently added head track. The numbering of a platform track with "0" is a great rarity. Tracks 1 and 2 were - in contrast to tracks 3 and 4 - not electrified , so flexible handling of the track occupancy was almost impossible. The remaining three tracks have also been live since the beginning of 2011. The system is mostly used according to the following scheme:
- Track 0: For ending trains, especially during construction work at Waverley station
- Platform 1: Trains via Forth Railway Bridge from Inverness and Aberdeen
- Platform 2: Trains via the Forth Railway Bridge to Inverness and Aberdeen
- Platform 3: Trains from Glasgow Central / Glasgow Queen Street and West Coast Main Line
- Platform 4: Trains to Glasgow Central / Glasgow Queen Street and West Coast Main Line

Long-distance trains of various routes stop on the five tracks of the station, on the one hand the trains to and from Glasgow , both those from / to Glasgow Queen Street via Falkirk, some trains of the East Coast Main Line and trains to and from Glasgow Central . On the other hand, the station is also reached by trains on the West Coast Main Line to and from southern Scotland as well as England and London. Most long-distance trains departing from Edinburgh Waverley stop only to get on and in the opposite direction only stop to get off. Regional trains also stop to, among others, Glasgow or the Fife Circle Line .
The station is served by the railway companies Abellio ScotRail , LNER , Virgin Trains , First TransPennine Express and CrossCountry .
Numerous bus routes and the Edinburgh tram stop in front of the station . There is a depot to the west of the station.
