The Hoxel train station is a train station in the Hoxel district of Morbach on the Hunsrückquerbahn in Rhineland-Palatinate . After the Hinzerath train station , it is the second highest train station in the Hunsrück . Not far from the train station is the famous Hunsrück Railway Viaduct .

history

The station was built on October 1, 1903 with the last section of the Hunsrückquerbahn from Morbach to Hermeskeil. The first freight traffic passed the station exactly one month later.

Originally the lever bench of the local signal box was located directly in front of the reception building and was provided with a simple windbreak. The mechanical signal box built by Hein & Lehmann in 1938 was located in front of the goods handling entrance . Not all points could be set remotely from the lever bench with nine seats . The local switches and track closures on the side tracks were therefore integrated into the route logic by means of key dependencies.

Shortly after the Second World War , the line between Hoxel and Thalfang was not passable because the Hunsrück Railway Viaduct was badly damaged in bombing in 1944. From the 1950s, however, operations were resumed.

In 1953, train control was introduced in Hoxel and the entry signals were replaced by trapezoidal panels , which meant that a dispatcher was no longer necessary. The station was still open as an agency for a few years, but this service was discontinued at the end of the 1950s. In the mid-1960s, the station lost its platform at the crossing track (track 1), which meant that only a freight train and a passenger train could pass.

Due to its proximity to the Idarwald, the station was of great importance in timber freight traffic. The earthenware from the quarry above the station was also removed from there. Until 1959 there were regular freight trains from Simmern to Hoxel, from 1960 only sporadic branch trips from Morbach.

For a long time, the station was considered a prime example of the regulations governing train control.

Station building and station area

The station building is a type construction with quarry stone , plaster and slate surfaces . The ground floor has large segment arched windows . On the left side of the gable is a small half-timbered extension, on the right side of the gable is a goods shed in visible framework . The facade facing the track system is not visible as the building is privately owned. The signal box extension is comparatively small.
