The Melrose Railway Station is the former train station in the Scottish town of Melrose in the Scottish Borders . In 1971, the structures that were preserved were included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest category A.

traffic

The North British Railway opened the section from Edinburgh to Hawick of the later Waverley Line in 1849 . Melrose station along the route opened on February 20, 1849. Coming from Edinburgh it was about four kilometers across the Redbridge Viaduct across the Tweed between the stations of Galashiels and St Boswells . The through station had two tracks and was used for both passenger and freight traffic. After the cargo handling in Melrose was stopped on May 18, 1964, the station became obsolete on January 6, 1969 when the railway line was abandoned as a result of the Beeching ax .

description

Station building

The station was on the southern edge of Melrose. The striking, two-story station building in neo-renaissance style with an L-shaped floor plan has been preserved. The north-facing front is divided into three segments. The western one is three axes wide and designed with curved gables . As in the rest of the building, the windows are made with profiled, stone central posts. Octagonal chimneys tower from the slate-roofed gable roofs . A blind wall going off to the right once served as the rear closure of the platform.

The southern platform was removed as part of the widening of the A6091. A wooden monopitch roof covers the northern platform. It is supported by 14  cast iron quarter arches that rest on cast iron pillars. Noteworthy is a cast iron urinal on the platform. The former outer buildings have meanwhile been largely torn down. When it opened, Melrose Station was described as the most beautiful provincial train station in Scotland. The buildings that have been preserved have since been restored and today they house a restaurant, among other things.
