history

Main building of the Olsztyn Główny train and bus station

The station was opened on December 1, 1872 with the main line from Thorn (Polish: Toruń) to Insterburg (Russian: Chernyachovsk) . In 1883 a branch line from Mohrungen ( Polish: Morąg ) to Allenstein and the line to Johannisburg ( Polish: Pisz ) went into operation. From the line to Mohrungen, a line in the direction of Königsberg branched off from 1884 in Göttkendorf ( Gutkowo in Polish ) . In 1887 a line to Hohenstein ( Polish: Olsztynek ) and on to Soldau ( Polish: Działdowo ) went into operation.

Exit towards east

In 1907 the construction of a tram connection was completed, which connected the station, which was built in 1872 far outside the city center, with the city center. In 1911 the station building and the platforms were connected to the power grid. Since 1936 or May 22, 1937, the station was called Allenstein Hbf , previously it was only called Allenstein , at times also Allenstein City . The old tram lines were closed in 1967. In 2015 a new tram line was opened.

The main building burned down on the night of February 17-18, 1945. The destroyed building was initially heavily rebuilt and modernized, but demolished in the late 1960s to make way for a concrete structure. The current station building is divided into a bus station and a train station.

Olsztyn was connected to the PKP electrical network in 1986 with the line from Działdowo. In 1988 the line from Toruń followed, in 1990 that from Morąg and the line in the north-east to Korsze .

With the takeover of 85 percent of the shares in PKS Olsztyn by retail providers in October 2011 , the new owner announced that he would demolish the existing station building and build a shopping center there. The traffic services are to be retained. No construction work had started by the end of 2016.
