The Olsztyn – Pisz railway is a railway line in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship in Poland . It runs from Olsztyn (Allenstein) via Szczytno (Ortelsburg) and Pisz (Johannisburg) to Ełk (Lyck) in the former East Prussia .
history
The line was opened by the Prussian State Railways on November 1, 1883 from Allenstein to Ortelsburg with 44.88 kilometers and extended by 56.91 kilometers via Rudczanny to Johannisburg on August 15, 1884, and the remaining section to Lyck was opened on November 16, 1885 , In 1914 the timetable indicated six pairs of trains per day, one of them with railcars . After the Second World War (course book 1946) the line to Szczytno was used for traffic to Białystok . The remaining distance to Pisz is only occupied by one pair of trains.
Due to their poor general condition, the train service on the 57 kilometer long section Szczytno-Ruciane-Nida-Pisz (Ortelsburg-Rudczanny-Nieden-Johannisburg) was discontinued on February 1, 2007 and replaced by buses , previously passenger traffic was on April 3, 2000 Pisz - Ełk (Johannisburg-Lyck) has been discontinued. After modernization, train traffic was resumed by PKP in January 2008 with a rail bus and extended to the Pisz – Ełk (Lyck) section on July 1, 2010. The route is given the route number 515 in the regional overviews at the stations, currently three pairs of passenger trains per day and a few freight trains run on the mostly single-track route . Special trains are added in the summer months.
At the end of 2010 it was announced that the 45-kilometer section between Olsztyn and Szczytno will be expanded from 2011. In addition to increasing the line speed to 100 km / h in this section, the railway line, which has been closed for more than ten years, is to be renewed towards the Szczytno-Szymany Airport, which has been closed since 2006, and the future airport terminal is to be provided with a siding.
Expansion stage I, the modernization of the line from Olsztyn to Szymany, was completed in 2013. Expansion stage II, the construction of a 1.6 km new line from PKP line No. 35 (Ostrołęka – Szczytno) from the terminal of Szczytno-Szymany airport to Szymany train station and the construction of a signal box with the corresponding infrastructure was completed by 2015.
From 2016, the airport will be served by a Przewozy Regionalne rail bus from Olsztyn. This train connects to the airlines.
The Szczytno – Ełk section is to be rehabilitated by 2020. The maximum speed is to be increased to 120 km / h and the platforms are to be renewed and, as a rule, raised to a height of 76 centimeters. While the Karwica Mazurska stop is to be closed, a new stop is planned in the east of Pisz.
