List of train stations in the Czech Republic |
The Plzeň-Jižní předměstí (German literally: Pilsen-Südvorstadt ) station is a train station in the Czech city of Pilsen at the address Koperníkova 1584/59. The high-rise buildings of the station are a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.
history
The station was built between 1903 and 1904 on the parallel railway lines Vienna – Eger and Prague – Furth im Wald as a stop at Pilsen Reichsvorstadt (Plzeň Ríšské předměstí).
The original Art Nouveau station building was first erected in the western part of the platform . The station quickly became popular with the residents of the suburb, especially as it was conveniently located for the employees of the nearby Škoda plant .
Between 1919 and 1920 the station was built around another building on the east side of the road bridge, which was designed and built in Renaissance style by the architect R. Buriana .
In 1945 the station was given the current name Jižní předměstí . In the following time, both buildings fell into disrepair due to lack of maintenance, although there were no traffic restrictions on the route and the station.
The reception buildings , the platforms with the stairs, the bridges and the iron railings were declared a cultural monument of the Czech Republic on September 11, 1995.
Kulturbahnhof
In the late 1980s / early 1990s the condition of the buildings deteriorated. From 1986 the western building was no longer needed for rail operations. At that time the cultural association Johancentrum was looking for a new alternative performance space for independent and experimental culture and was able to rent the desolate building. For years money was raised for the renovation.
During the International Theater Festival ( Mezinárodní festival Divadlo in Czech ) in 2000, the theater was played for the first time on the construction site. The cultural association received a five-year contract for its use from the owner Československé státní dráhy , which was subsequently extended. In December 2006 the building was auctioned and the cultural association also received a usage contract from the new property owner.
The building has been in daily use during the summer months since 2003. The lack of fixed furniture enables variable use. Due to the dimensions of the stage with a width of twelve meters, a depth of ten meters and a height of 3.85 meters as well as a spectator capacity of 40 to 80 people, the theater can be used in a variety of ways.
Further construction work
Since the access was unsatisfactory, the architect Martina Kondra designed a new bridge for pedestrians and cyclists over the railway line, which was also built in 2006. As part of the competition for the European Capital of Culture 2015, the renovation of the eastern building, which provides access to the platforms and which houses the ticket offices, was tackled.
