Princess Désirée, Baroness Silfverschiöld , (full name Désirée Elisabeth Sibylla ; * June 2, 1938 ) is the third child of Gustav Adolf Hereditary Prince of Sweden and his wife Sibylla von Sachsen-Coburg and Gotha and granddaughter of Gustav VI. Adolf . Her brother is Carl XVI. Gustaf .

Life

biography

Princess Desiree was born on the family seat of Schloss Haga outside Stockholm and grew up there with her three sisters; they were known as the "Haga Princesses". It was named after her ancestor Désirée Clary and after her mother Sybilla.

Marriage and children

Princess Désirée's engagement to Baron Nils-August Otto Carl Niclas Silfverschiöld , born in the Swedish castle Koberg on May 31, 1934, son of Baron Carl Silfverschiöld (1899–1955) and his wife Madeleine Bennich, was announced on December 18, 1963. The couple married on June 5, 1964 at Storkyrkan in Stockholm. As a result of their unequal marriage, she lost her title of "Royal Highness". The king gave her the courtesy title of Princess Désirée, Baroness Silfverschiöld. According to the Swedish constitution at the time, she was not entitled to the throne as a woman; hence their children are not either. Her husband died on April 11, 2017.

In November 1960 Désirée accompanied her older sister Birgitta on a visit to the USA on behalf of her grandfather King Gustaf VI. Adolf on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the American-Scandinavian Foundation . A ball with Mayor Richard J. Daley was held at the Renaissance Blackstone Hotel in Chicago in honor of the two princesses .

Silfverschiöld lives on the family estate Koberg Castle and Gasevadholm Castle in Halland . She takes part in royal family events. Princess Désirée and Baron Silfverschiöld are occasionally invited to state banquets and receptions in Sweden. Together with her family, she was a guest at the wedding of Victoria of Sweden and Daniel of Sweden in 2010 , where her grandson Ian Page was. Princess Désirée is the godmother of Crown Princess Victoria.
