The Shimada Station ( Jap. 島田駅 , Shimada-eki ) is a train station on the Japanese island of Honshu , operated by the railway company JR Central . It is located in Shizuoka Prefecture in the Shimada City area .

description

Shimada is a through station and former connecting station on the Tōkaidō main line operated by JR Central , one of the most important railway lines in Japan. Regional trains run between Atami and Toyohashi three to six times an hour, depending on the route section and time of day . Additional home liners (ホ ー ム ラ イ ナ ー), express trains with reserved seats , run between Numazu and Hamamatsu during peak traffic periods .

The station is in the Hinode-chō district, south of the city center. The facility is oriented from east to west and has four tracks, three of which are used for passenger traffic. These are located on a central platform and on a side platform (both covered). The station building has the shape of a riding station that spans both platforms. Adjacent to it, a wide, covered pedestrian bridge creates a continuous connection across the entire complex. On the south side there is a parking facility with four tracks. The four-track freight station on the northwest side is used to handle wagonload traffic .

There is a bus terminal on the northern forecourt of the station , from which several city bus routes and lines operated by Shizutetsu Justline operate. From the south entrance there is a shuttle bus to Shizuoka Airport . In 2016 the station counted an average of 5595 passengers a day.

history

The state railway administration opened the station on April 16, 1889, together with the Shizuoka - Hamamatsu section of the Tōkaidō main line . On April 13, 1898, the local company Shimada Kidō took a freight railway line into operation. This 2.9 km long hand-operated train was used to transport wood from a pier on the Ōi River to the train station, where it was loaded onto freight wagons. The Shimada Railway was closed on September 30, 1959 and thus existed longer than any other railway of this type in all of Japan.

For cost reasons, the Japanese State Railways drastically reduced the once brisk traffic in the freight yard on January 16, 1984, and from then on limited it to sporadic wagonload traffic for local industrial companies. On March 14, 1985, she stopped checking baggage. As part of the privatization of the state railway, the station passed into the ownership of the new company JR Central on April 1, 1987 . In February 2008, the new station building was opened after a construction period of almost two years.
