The Kanaya Station ( Jap. 金谷駅 , Kanaya-eki ) is a train station on the Japanese island of Honshu , operated by the railways JR Central and Oigawa tetsudō . It is located in Shizuoka Prefecture in the Shimada City area .

description

Kanaya is a separation station on the JR Central operated Tōkaidō Main Line , one of the most important railway lines in Japan. From this branches off the Ōigawa main line , which is operated by the Ōigawa Tetsudō . On the Tōkaidō main line, regional trains run two to five times an hour between Atami and Toyohashi , depending on the route section and time of day . On the Ōigawa main line, regional trains run nine times a day to Senzu , where there is a connection to the Ikawa line . There are also shuttle trains to the neighboring Shin-Kanaya station; there you can switch to the numerous special trains with historical vehicles.

The station is in the Kanayashinmachi district, between the bridge over the Ōi and the north portal of the Makinohara Tunnel. The facility is oriented from northeast to southwest and has five tracks, three of which are used for passenger traffic. On the Tōkaidō main line, the trains stop at two partially covered side platforms with pull-out tracks , while passing trains use the two tracks in between. A passenger tunnel leads from the east side platform to the reception building on the west side of the facility. There is also a tongue platform for trains on the Ōigawa main line. The Ōigawa Tetsudō has its own small reception building with a shop. The forecourt is the terminus of four bus routes operated by the Shizutetsu Justline company and the Shimada city bus.

In 2016 the station counted an average of 2296 passengers a day.

history

The state railway administration had opened the Shizuoka - Hamamatsu section of the Tōkaidō main line on April 16, 1889, but the trains initially went through here without stopping. Finally, the Kanaya station opened thirteen months later on May 16, 1890. From 1925, the Ōigawa main line was built , which was primarily intended to facilitate the transport of workers and material to the construction sites of several planned dams and hydroelectric power stations . Their first section from Kanaya to Yokooka went into operation on June 10, 1927. For cost reasons, the Japanese State Railways stopped handling goods on October 1, 1971, and checked baggage on March 14, 1985. As part of the privatization of the state railway, the state part of the station was transferred to the new company JR Central on April 1, 1987 .
