The Sunagawa Station ( Jap. 砂川駅 , Sunagawa-eki ) is a train station on the Japanese island of Hokkaido . It is located in Sorachi Sub-Prefecture, Sunagawa City .

Sunagawa is a through station and former separation station on the Hakodate main line between Sapporo and Asahikawa , the most important railway line Hokkaidōs. The Super Kamui express train , which runs every 30 or 60 minutes, provides the fastest connection with Sapporo and Asahikawa. This offer is supplemented by the Super Sōya and Sarobetsu express trains from Sapporo to Wakkanai and the Ochotsk express train from Sapporo to Abashiri . There are also regional trains between Iwamizawa and Takikawa every 30 to 90 minutes . Coach company Hokkaido Chuo Bus stop about 100 meters from the train station located on the main road.

The train station in the city center is oriented from south to north and has three tracks, all of which are used for passenger traffic. They are located on the main platform and on a central platform that is connected to the reception building on the west side of the facility by a covered overpass . Another overpass leads from the station forecourt over the tracks to a shopping center on the east side, but is not connected to the central platform.

The mining and railway company Hokkaidō Tankō Tetsudō opened the station on July 5, 1891, together with the section between Iwamizawa and the Sorachi Bridge south of Takikawa . On the same day, it also started operating the 14.5 km long Utashinai Line , which branched off in Sunagawa and opened up several hard coal mines east of the city. Seven years later, the continuous connection from Sapporo to Asahikawa was completed. After the nationalization of Hokkaidō Tankō Tetsudō on October 1, 1906, the Railway Authority (later the Ministry of Railways ) was responsible for the entire Hakodate Main Line and the Utashinai Line.

On November 5, 1918, the Mitsui Group opened a 7.3 km long branch line to Kami-Sunagawa to develop further coal deposits . The Ministry of Railways was responsible for the operation and took over the Kamisunagawa branch line on August 1, 1926. From that day on, it also offered passenger services and considered the branch line to be part of the Hakodate main line. In 1954, the Japanese State Railways replaced the previous station building with a new building. For cost reasons, it stopped handling goods on February 1, 1984, and checked baggage on March 14, 1985. As part of the privatization of the state railway, the station passed into the possession of the new company JR Hokkaido on April 1, 1987 . This shut down the Utashinai line on April 25, 1988 and in 1989 rebuilt the station building again. The Kamisunagawa branch line was also shut down on May 16, 1994; since then only the Hakodate main line has passed through Sunagawa.
