The station buffet is located between the tracks in the higher building.

The Olten train station buffet (the expression “train station buffet” is common as Helvetism for “ train station restaurant ”) is due to its central location in the Olten train station , which opened in 1856 and one of the most important railway hubs in Switzerland , in addition to its function as a rest stop for travelers and an inn for residents von Olten is a preferred place for gatherings and meetings of companies, associations, parties, trade unions, authorities and other groups from all over Switzerland.

history

In the original station building of the Swiss Central Railway Company, there was a restaurant, in addition to numerous other facilities, which consisted of two separate areas for first and second class rail passengers. At that time, the restaurant was still directly accessible from the Bahnhofplatz - the square was only later built over with track systems. After the construction of the Gäubahn line and the additional tracks on the station square, the Olten station was expanded, and since then the rooms available to the station buffet have also changed.

The SBB handed over the management of the station buffet to the Swiss Dining Car Company , which established its headquarters in Olten in 1952. The company changed its name to Passenger Rail in 2000 and was taken over by Autogrill in the same year . Since then, Autogrill Schweiz AG has been running the Olten train station buffet.

Founding of organizations in the Olten train station buffet

When numerous associations and companies were formed, the decisive meetings took place in the Olten railway station buffet. Examples are:

Other important gatherings also took place in the centrally located Olten, but not in the station buffet. For example, the Olten Action Committee , which initiated the state strike of 1918, was formed in the Olten Volkshaus.

Bahnhofbuffet Olten dialect

A Swiss-German mixed language is jokingly referred to as the “Bahnhofbuffet Olten dialect” , in which the regional origin can no longer be clearly identified. The impression that there is such a dialect arises from the fact that many dialect differences have been reduced in the catchment area of the large agglomerations . From a linguistic point of view, it is often argued that such a dialect does not exist, because the dialect differences between the various large agglomerations persist with unchanged clarity. Nevertheless, not only the small, but also the large-scale dialect balance is noticeable, but there is still too little research on this to quantify this balance.

Quote

“The Olten train station buffet is the hotbed of Swiss well-being. In his meeting rooms, visions become statutes, and all chaos finds a federal folder. [...] There should be Swiss people who have never been to a meeting in Olten. Many cannot be. "
