The Ban Dara Junction – Sawankhalok railway is a 28.8 kilometer long railway line in northern Thailand .

Location in the network

It connects the city of Sawankhalok , the administrative center of Amphoe Sawankhalok , with the Northern Railway , the long-distance railway line from Bangkok to Chiang Mai .

history

The route was not included in the original construction program for the northern runway. Rather, the connection between the Northern Railway and Sawankhalok was to be made by a new road to be built by the Royal Railway Department (RRD). The then director of the RRD, Luis Weiler , suggested building a railway branch line instead . Since the effort involved in building a new road was not too important, the then rail minister , Maha-Ammat-Ek Phraya Suriyanuwat มหา อำมาตย์ เอก พระยา สุริยา นุ วัตร (1862-1936), agreed.

The structural specifications for this branch line were based on those of the main line, the northern line. In particular, this meant that it was built in the standard gauge of 1435 mm. That also meant that, like all other lines in standard gauge and the northern line itself, it was re- gauged to meter gauge in the 1920s .

business

The route is used by passenger and freight trains. A continuous connection to Bangkok Hua Lamphong is offered daily .
