Railway line Malmö – Ystad to Ystad

The Charlottenlund – Skivarp railway was a standard-gauge Swedish railway line . It was built by Ystad – Skivarps Järnvägsaktiebolag (YSJ), a private railway company , between Skivarp and Charlottenlund .

The Charlottenlund – Skivarp railway was originally planned as a freight railway to transport the sugar beets from the surrounding area to the sugar factory in Skivarp. The planning was carried out by Trelleborg – Rydsgårds Järnväg (TRJ), which provided a connection between Skivarp on the TRJ to Charlottenlund station on Malmö – Ystads Järnväg (MYJ). The concession for the Trelleborg – Rydsgård line was granted on January 12, 1893. Then the license for the connecting railway between Skivarp and Charlottenlund was applied for. This route was approved on September 21, 1895.

Since the construction work had not started, the concession expired on March 18, 1898.

Ystad – Skivarps Järnvägsaktiebolag

Since local interests in the construction of a railway line continued to exist, a new concession was applied for, which was approved. Then the Ystad – Skivarps Järnvägsaktiebolag was founded on April 7, 1899 and took over this concession on April 14.

Now the eleven-kilometer route between Skivarp and Charlottenlund was built and opened to general traffic on August 2, 1901. The line was with steel rails with a weight per meter built of 24.8 kilograms. The Skivarp hållplads stop was built right next to the sugar factory in Skivarp, which opened in the same year and closed in 1961. The trains only stopped when needed.

27 two-axle freight cars were procured for freight transport . A contract was signed with Ystad – Eslövs Järnvägsaktiebolag (YEJ) to carry out the operation , according to which they provided the locomotives , the staff and the passenger cars for the YSJ and were paid for the freight traffic. From 1904 the Malmö – Ystads Järnvägsaktiebolag took over this task.

When it was founded, the YSJ agreed to work in Trafikförbundet Ystads Järnvägar (YJ).

Shutdown

The company soon ran into financial difficulties. The traffic performance was low that after a few years it was decided to discontinue the route. It was closed on February 16, 1919 after only 18 years of operation. The track systems were dismantled in the same year. The route was thus one of the Swedish routes that only had a very short operating time.
