The railroad line Meckenbeuren-Tettnang - originally local railway Meckenbeuren-Tettnang - was a 4.22 km long branch line in Baden-Wuerttemberg . It was the first electrified standard-gauge railway with passenger and goods traffic in Germany. The line, which opened on December 4, 1895, was built and initially operated by the private Lokalbahn Aktien-Gesellschaft in Munich ; after its liquidation , it was nationalized in 1938. The German Federal Railroad stopped passenger traffic as early as 1976, and in 1996 the line was finally completely shut down by Deutsche Bahn AG .

The line branched off in Meckenbeuren from the Ulm – Friedrichshafen line . There the railcars drove off on the station forecourt in front of the station building . The terminus and center of operations was the former Oberamts - or district town of Tettnang , in which the workshop, the control center and a two-tier railcar shed were located. The construction and acquisition costs of the railway totaled 810,000 marks, of which 677,000 marks were charged to the LAG; The city of Tettnang contributed 133,000 marks. The electrical power was at the beginning of the water-powered shot power plant in the near Schussental generated.

Initially, two electric multiple units, passenger cars and boxcars were procured as vehicles, all of which were designed with two axles. The total length of the track was almost six kilometers, and with a height difference of 50 meters, the line also had a considerable gradient.

On August 1, 1938, the Deutsche Reichsbahn took over the line and continued operations. Due to the war, steam locomotives were used from 1945 to 1950. From February 1, 1962, diesel locomotives and Uerdingen rail buses of the Deutsche Bundesbahn finally replaced the electric railcars.

On May 30, 1976, passenger traffic was stopped. In the best of times there were over twenty trips a day, in 1958 there were 18. In the meantime, the company was no longer competitive with the direct buses to Friedrichshafen. On May 27, 1995 came the end of freight traffic, which was also quite busy. The official shutdown took place on February 1, 1996.

On the occasion of the cessation of passenger traffic, the "Bähnlesfest" was launched in Tettnang, which takes place every year on the second Sunday in September.

In October 2011, a bypass road was opened on the former railway line between Bechlingen and Tettnang station.

With the exception of the EB 184 51 built by AEG , all vehicles were supplied by MAN .
The ET 183 05 was parked in the Freudenstadt depot from 1962 and in the Kornwestheim depot from 1981; in 1986 it came to the German Museum of Technology in Berlin .
