The Reuth – Erbendorf railway line , called Erbendorfer Bockl , was a branch line in Bavaria . It was a branch line in the former district of Kemnath in the northern Upper Palatinate .

history

The small town of Erbendorf in the Fichtelnaab valley , which had around 1,300 inhabitants around 1910, was a few kilometers west of the north-south route Eger – Weiden, which was opened in 1864 by the AG der Bayerische Ostbahnen . It was not until October 1, 1909 that the Bavarian State Railroad established a 7-kilometer rail link to the Reuth station on the main line. In Erbendorf, there were two stops just 1.1 km apart: the Erbendorf Süd stop and the Erbendorf Nord terminus. Both had a brisk freight traffic, but the frequency of the train station Erbendorf-Nord always exceeded that of Erbendorf-Süd.

This was preceded by a lengthy dispute about the location of the train station between a northern and a southern party, which the Paris newspaper Le Temps even reported in 1907 under the title "Erbendorf in Bavaria - a model and example of German unity!" So both parties got their station.

The establishment of the porcelain manufacturer Seltmann Weiden with factories in Erbendorf and Krummennaab was only due to this railway. Shortly before the north station, a siding branched off the railway line to Seltmann Erbendorf.

Initially, four pairs of trains ran daily for passenger transport, in 1927 there were only three, in 1939 five again and in 1950 even seven. But as early as 1954, trains only ran on weekdays. On October 10, 1959, to mark the 50th anniversary of the railway, a festively decorated special train with a class 70 locomotive at the beginning and end of the train ran.

In the last few years of operation, the passenger train sets consisted of a small locomotive and a two-axle passenger car. If necessary, all trains ran as PwG . Passenger traffic ended on May 28, 1972. All school children received free tickets from the city of Erbendorf, and a “funeral meeting” in frock coats and top hats accompanied the train, pulled by a class 64 locomotive , on its last journey.

Freight traffic was carried out until the end of 1997. The line was closed on May 24, 1998.

In Erbendorf, today's Kurweg follows the former railway line. A section of track and the former entrance signal for Reuth train station are reminiscent of the route.

In 2008 the former Seltmann (Deutz) factory locomotive was repainted and erected as a memorial in the Erbendorf factory site.

On September 12, 2010, the former Deutz 57526 Bundeswehr locomotive was erected as a memorial near the former locomotive shed at the Nordbahnhof . It had been acquired by the city of Erbendorf and painted traffic red based on the last Köf III that ran. In September 2018, the locomotive was moved to a nearby location, also on the former station grounds, to make room for a new building.
