The Sofia – Varna railway line ( Bulgarian Железопътна линия София - Варна ) is a predominantly double-track, electrified railway line between the Bulgarian capital Sofia and the port city of Varna ( Bulgarian Варна ). It is about 550 kilometers long, making it the longest of the 9 main routes in Bulgaria. The line was opened on November 8, 1899.
history
After the liberation of Bulgaria from Turkish rule, the demand for a railway line between Sofia and Kaspichan , the end point of the line to Varna at that time, increased. After disputes over the route, the first section Kaspichan - Shumen was opened on June 20, 1895 , the second section between Sofia and Roman on February 20, 1897 and the last, decisive section between Roman and Shumen two years later.
Rail operations
Trains connect Sofia with Varna six times a day, one pair of trains a day runs as an express. Travel time is approximately 7–8 hours. Other trains also use the route, for example the regional train between Sofia and Mezdra .
