Targovishte [ tɤrˈɡɔviʃtɛ ] ( Bulgarian Търговище ) is a city in eastern Bulgaria . It is the administrative center of Targovishte Oblast .
The old Turkish name of Targovishte was Eski Cuma (Bulgarian Ески Джумая; Eski Dschumaja, in German: Alter Markt).

Targovishte is about 40 km west of Shumen , 340 km northeast of Sofia and 25 km northwest of Veliky Preslav .
history
Archaeological finds from the Copper Age (5th / 4th millennium BC) testify to the long history of settlement in this region. Remains of Thracian settlements from the 5th – 3rd centuries were found in the vicinity of the city. Century BC Found remains of Roman settlements from the time of the Roman Empire (2nd – 4th centuries AD) and remains of Byzantine settlements and fortresses (5th – 6th centuries AD). The remains of a settlement from the First Bulgarian Empire (Sborishte Fortress - bulg. Сборище) and a settlement and fortress from the Second Bulgarian Empire were found.
In the tax register of the Ottoman Empire from 1573, the old Turkish name Eski Cuma was mentioned for the first time. In 1658 Eski Cuma became the administrative center of the region.
The Ottoman rule ended for the city on January 9, 1878 with the Russo-Turkish War . This day (according to the new calendar January 29) is celebrated annually in the city.
In 1934 the city was renamed Targovishte.
There is a spring fair and an industrial exhibition in the city. It has been the namesake of the Targovishte Glacier on Greenwich Island in Antarctica since 2005 .
