Dulowo ( bulg .: Дулово , Romanian: Accadânalar, Turkish: Akkadınlar) is a city in northeastern Bulgaria , in the Silistra Oblast . The city is the third largest city in Silistra Oblast after Silistra and Tutrakan . Dulowo is the center of the homonymous municipality Dulowo and is located in the south Dobruja .

history

The village of Dulowo was first mentioned in an Ottoman document in 1573 under the name Akkadınlar, which translated means "white women" (white women / ladies; or pure or honest women / ladies). Near the place was the village of Alen Bakhcha (German: famous garden). The settlement was burned down several times, but rebuilt under the Turkish name Akkadınlar. Even before the end of Ottoman rule in 1878, the settlement had a mixed population of Turks and Bulgarians. These Bulgarians were settlers from the Preslaw region .

After the defeat in the Second Balkan War , Bulgaria had to cede the southern Dobruja along with this region to Romania. With the Treaty of Craiova of 1940, the village fell back to Bulgaria. In 1942 it was given its current name Dulowo, which is reminiscent of the famous medieval Dulo dynasty of the Bulgarians. "-owo" is the Slavic ending used to designate place names. In 1960 Dulowo was declared a city.

In the vicinity of Dulowo there is the Schaschda Park (Bulgarian Жажда) with a burial mound. Archaeological traces from the period of settlement during antiquity, the Middle Ages and Ottoman rule have been found in the region - ceramic shards, coins, weapons, tools, building foundations. In the past a river flowed here and there were many springs.

At the train station is a statue of Winston Churchill , who passed here on his way to the Soviet Union.

geography

The region of the municipality of Dulowo is mainly flat and is crossed by a few dry valleys of different widths, which run in a north-south direction. Most of the settlements in Dobruja are built along these valleys. The height above sea level is 150 to 200 m.

The Dobruja Plain open to the north. The wind blows mainly from the south and southeast. In winter there is a strong, cold north-easterly wind that brings snow. In summer there are often strong, hot winds that encourage soil erosion .

The annual rainfall is 650 mm, which is less than the average rainfall in Bulgaria. The drought has a detrimental effect on the growth of trees and grass.

The area of the municipality is 23% covered by forest. It outweigh natural forests with oak , turkey oak , hornbeam and others. During the reforestation of the region with commercial forests and the afforestation of the areas between the villages, conifers were also planted.

economy

The "Agrokomb" plant produces agricultural machinery and spare parts, as well as, to a lesser extent, cast iron pipes.

Culture

The historical museum opened in 1998. It has archaeological and ethnographic exhibits, as well as a section on recent history and a gallery.

In Dulowo there is the Tschitalischte "Nikola Wapzarow" ( Nikola Wapzarow ).

The city festival takes place every year in May.
