The Sonneberg – Stockheim line was a 15 km long branch line that ran from Sonneberg in southern Thuringia to Stockheim in Upper Franconia . The single-track line with a gauge of 1435 mm ( standard gauge ) was not electrified. The former route has been partially accessible as an asphalt cycle path since 2010.

Track construction

Since the end of the 1880s, the Sonneberg Chamber of Commerce in particular demanded a railway line to Stockheim, because it saved a 57 km detour via Lichtenfels on the connections to the north with the Hochstadt-Marktzeuln-Probstzella railway line . In 1897, a state treaty was finally signed between the Kingdom of Prussia , the Kingdom of Bavaria and the Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen on the construction of a rail link between Köppelsdorf-Oberlind and Stockheim.

The first 3.5 km section from Sonneberg to Köppelsdorf-Oberlind was built as a continuation of the Coburg – Sonneberg railway from May 1, 1885 and opened on October 1, 1886 by the Werra Railway Company as part of the Sonneberg – Lauscha railway been. In 1909 this section was extended by a second track due to the increase in traffic, which was dismantled again in 1946.

The Prussian State Railway put the 6.2 km long route from Köppelsdorf-Oberlind to Neuhaus-Schierschnitz into operation on December 15, 1900. The connection was continuously passable with the completion of the 6.5 km long section between Neuhaus-Schierschnitz and Stockheim, where it joined the existing Hochstadt-Marktzeuln – Probstzella railway on June 1, 1901. The cost of the route was 1.6 Million marks.

The line developed into an important connecting line to the north for freight and passenger traffic. In the summer of 1939, it had eight pairs of passenger trains and the Coburg – Sonneberg – Stockheim – Saalfeld – Göschwitz – Weimar express train on weekdays . On the Reichsbahn, the line that belonged to the Reichsbahndirektion Erfurt had the course book route number 190m.

As a result of the Second World War, the railway line was not damaged, so that from May 14, 1945, commodity trains ran. After the occupation of Thuringia by Soviet troops on July 3, 1945, the train service between Neuhaus-Schierschnitz and Burggrub was stopped because the inner German border crossed the route at 30 km.

In February 1949, the line made headlines when a Sonneberg locomotive drove to Burggrub after the torn open track was restored, and 31 damaged wagons from the Nuremberg Railway Directorate crossed the border there.

Passenger train traffic on the remaining section from Sonneberg-Ost to Neuhaus-Schierschnitz was discontinued on September 24, 1967, with the last four pairs of trains on workdays. Freight traffic followed in October 1970 and by 1972 the track system had been dismantled to a distance of 23.6 kilometers. The remaining tracks from Sonneberg-Ost with the associated factory connections were dismantled in 2000.

On the stretch from Stockheim to Burggrub, after the last two pairs of trains on workdays, passenger traffic was stopped in September 1972. In February 1987 the cessation of the freight traffic followed and in the same year the route dismantling.
