Swell:

The Borken – Burgsteinfurt railway was a standard-gauge railway line operated by the Westphalian State Railway (WLE), also known as the Northern Railway (WLE) .

history

The line was opened on October 1, 1902. It branched off from the Winterswijk – Gelsenkirchen – Bismarck railway in Borken and joined the Enschede – Münster connection in Burgsteinfurt . In Ahaus was Dortmund-Enschede railway crossed. A 9.2 kilometer branch line to Vreden began in Stadtlohn .

Passenger traffic was terminated on May 31, 1958 between Stadtlohn and Vreden, followed by the Burgsteinfurt – Borken section on September 30, 1962 with the exception of two daily express train pairs (Gronau – Bottrop / Cologne); on September 27, 1975 passenger traffic was completely stopped.

The end of operations also affected the freight traffic between Burgsteinfurt and Ahaus on December 31, 1972 (apart from a residual traffic from Ahaus to Nienborg- Heek during the construction of the A 31 , which was maintained until November 1, 1987) and on September 27, 1975 between Ahaus and city wages. In 1984 the operation of the traffic was transferred to the Federal Railroad. However, the route itself remained in the possession of the WLE. On March 31, 1988, the freight transport Vreden – Stadtlohn – Borken was stopped by the DB, followed by the complete closure and the immediate and complete dismantling.

The northern line in the former Stadtlohn train station is presented as a museum .
