history

After the Poprad Valley Railway from Poprad to Kežmarok was opened in 1889 , construction of the branching line to Tatranská Lomnica was started in 1894, which was opened a year later. The Kaschau-Oderberger Bahn took over the management of the private local railway.

After just a few weeks there was an accident in which no one was injured, but which led to traffic being disrupted for nine months. Another serious accident occurred on July 22, 1951, in which 19 people died.

Train in Tatranská Lomnica

The line is single-track and not electrified. Local trains run from Poprad to and from Kežmarok, Stará Ľubovna or Plaveč. In Studený potok there are connections to and from Tatranská Lomnica every two hours. The line to Tatranská Lomnica ends in Studený Potok in a stump track. For the Poprad – Plaveč line, there is an intersection track with fallback switches at this station. The connecting switches between the two lines are locally operated and secured with hand locks. Due to the timetable design, no switches need to be changed in Studený Potok during normal operation.
