Bahr al-Arab ( Arabic بحر العرب Baḥr al-ʿArab : "River of the Arabs"), also called Kiir , is a river in Sudan and South Sudan .

course

The Bahr al-Arab rises on Mount Ngaja in the Bongo massif , near the border with the Central African Republic and flows to a large extent through the state of Dschanub Darfur . The river is around 800 kilometers long and forms the Bahr al-Ghazal river at the confluence with the Jur . In parts it roughly forms the border between North and South Sudan .

Tributaries include Shalleikha , Kyom and Wadi Ibra and the Lol , the exact course of which at the mouth is unclear. In the flat terrain there are channels that connect the Jur with the Lol and lead to the Bahr al-Arab.

The river is flooded in summer and is not navigable.
