Baileychromis centropomoides ( Syn .: Leptochromis centropomoides ) is an African cichlid species that occurs endemically in the East African Lake Tanganyika at depths of 40 to 100 meters. The species epithet centropomoides is intended to indicate the external similarity of the species with the snooks ( Centropomus ).

features

Baileychromis centropomoides is about 17 cm long and has a very slim build and is slightly flattened on the sides with a straight belly and a slightly curved back line. The body height is less than a quarter of the standard length . The fish have comb scales . The head length is 33 to 36% of the standard length. The muzzle is flattened. The jaw teeth are irregularly spaced in several rows, with those in the outer row being slightly larger than the others. All teeth are small and conical. The pharyngeal teeth are also conical. The dorsal fin usually has 15, less often 14 or 16, fin spines and 11, less often 10 or 12, soft rays. The dorsal fin spines 2 to 5 are significantly longer than the others and elongated by filaments. As with most cichlids, the anal fin has three fin spines, the number of soft rays here is 8 or 9. The pectoral fins are supported by 15 or 16 fin rays. The outermost ray of the pelvic fins is twice as long as the innermost and, when the pelvic fins are put on, extends to the beginning of the anal fin. The caudal fin is slightly indented, the lower lobe rounded, the upper slightly longer and more pointed.

  • Scale formula : LR 51–59; SL 37–45 / 27–44, 3 (2) scales between the side lines,.

Baileychromis centropomoides shares numerous characteristics with Reganochromis calliurus and is probably closely related to this species of cichlid, with Baileychromis centropomoides being more specialized than Reganochromis calliurus .
