Baityloi (Santa Caterina di Pittinuri)

Baitylos of the Oragiana type

The five Baityloi of Santa Caterina di Pittinuri are at the church of the town of Santa Caterina in the province of Oristano in Sardinia . They come from the giant tomb of Oragiana (also Oraggiana) to the north , where there is also a nuraghe .

There are in a strip in the middle of Sardinia extending from coast to coast, about 20 giant tombs of tapered, smooth or anthropomorphic indicated Baityloi (sing Baitylos;. Ital. Betilo ) are accompanied. 23 specimens, mainly made of basalt , show three to five round or square depressions around the upper third and are grouped under the "oragiana type".

The Baityloi of Oragiana (5), Perdu Pes (3) and Solene (3) are between 1.05 and 1.93 high, with an average circumference of 1.75 m. One of the betili from Perdu Pes and one from Oragiana has a round depression of uncertain importance in the middle of the top.

The conical shape stylizes a human figure. The basic shape is perfected by the anthropomorphic representation of the eyes, which points to an abnormal superhuman being whose shape has a magical-religious meaning. A few show a realistic face.
