Bakassi Boys

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bakassi Boys are a vigilante group in Nigeria . They were created in 1999 in the city of Aba in the state of Abia .

This group carries out police activities with the tolerance, support and sometimes also on the official order and payment of governors in southeastern Nigerian states , such as Chinwoke Mbadinuju (Governor of Anambra ). The Bakassi Boys do not see themselves as an ethnic militia - in contrast to the O'odua People's Congress (OPC) of the Yoruba . The Economist wrote of the group in 2001 that it would look like the Bakassi Boys in some parts of Nigeria would become the private army of the governors they hired.

The Bakassi Boys are charged with human rights abuses such as torture, mutilation and execution of suspects.
