O'odua People's Congress

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The O'odua People's Congress (OPC) group pursues the unity and autonomy of the descendants of Oduduwa , the ancestor of the Yoruba .

The group formed in August 1994 following the cancellation of the first democratic presidential election won by the Yoruba Moshood Abiola . According to its own information, the OPC has more than five million members in the southwestern states of Lagos , Ogun , Oyo , Osun , Ondo and Ekiti as well as in Kwara and Kogi in central Nigeria.

From 1999 the OPC has been pursuing the self-determination of the Yoruba with vigilant activities, possibly inspired by the popularity of the Bakassi Boys in southeastern Nigeria. The OPC is also said to be responsible for armed attacks on other ethnic groups, especially in Lagos .
