Bakchion

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bakchion ( ancient Greek Βακχιών ) was a month in at least two ancient Greek calendars , which are based on the Ionic calendar .

The month is attested by inscriptions for the calendars of Mykonos and Keos . On Mykonos it probably followed the Lenaion , the names of the months before and after Bakchios on Keos are unknown. In the Attic calendar , the reference calendar for Ionic local calendars, it is equated with the Anthesterion , which in the Julian calendar roughly corresponds to February .

The name of the month is traced back to a festival that was celebrated in honor of Dionysus Bakchos . The equation of the Bakchion with the Attic Anthesterion was based on the consideration that Dionysus festivals in ancient Greece were always celebrated in winter and that with the Anthesterion a month used in many Greek calendars is known, which was named after the Dionysus festival Anthesteria .
