Calendar of Mykonos
The Mykonos calendar is a Greek calendar from the Ionian calendar group that was in use on the Cycladic island of Mykonos .
From Mykonos there is an inscription on a calendar of sacrifices which contains the four names of the months Posideon , Lenaion , Bakchion and Hekatombaion . The order of the months in the inscription follows the occurrence of the months in the year of sacrifice. The Posideon is known in a large number of different Ionic calendars and also appears in the Attic calendar , the reference calendar for Ionic monthly sequences. It can therefore be equated with the position in these calendars. The Lenaion is also attested as one of the oldest Ionian month names in a large number of calendars, where it always follows the Posideon. The Hekatombaion is also a month, which is assumed to be a month of the Ionic original calendar due to its distribution. Its position, however, fluctuates within the Ionic calendar group between the position of the Attic Hekatombaion and the Skirophorion . Otherwise the Bakchion only appears in the Keos calendar . As a month named after a Dionysus festival, it is usually equated with the Attic Anthesterion .
Because of the proximity of Mykonos and Delos , it is assumed that the calendars of Mykonos and Delos correspond , apart from the replacement of the allionic month Anthesterion by Bakchios and Hieros respectively. However, this equation remains speculative.
The best known Ionic calendar, the Attic calendar, serves as a reference calendar for locating the months of the year. The Attic Hekatombaion roughly corresponds to the month of July in the Julian calendar .
