The Omura's whale ( Balaenoptera omurai ) is in November 2003 , first described type of rorquals (Balaenopteridae) belonging to the baleen whales include (Mysticeti). The type specimens of the species were caught in the Sea of Japan ( Terra typica ), the Solomon Sea and near the Cocos Islands in the late 1970s .
According to the first descriptor Shirō Wada ( 和田 志 郎 ), Masayuki Ōishi ( 大石 雅 之 ) and Tadasu K. Yamada ( 山田 格 ) from Japan , it is a species very similar to the fin whale ( Balaenoptera physalus ), but with a length of around twelve meters is significantly smaller than this. Also they have with only 200 Barten significantly less than other baleen whales. Nothing is known about the way of life of the animals.
The publication of the species description in the journal Nature on November 20, 2003 initially met with massive doubts in the professional world, as Omura whales have so far only been thought of as small specimens of the Bryde's whales . The researchers backed up their description by comparing mitochondrial DNA with other whales, highlighting the need for further analysis. They were based on nine individuals, eight of which had already been caught in the late 1970s. Between 2007 and 2014, Omura whales off the north-west coast of Madagascar were first researched and filmed. A specimen was photographed on the Great Barrier Reef in December 2016 . Another confirmed sighting took place in Taiwan on May 22, 2017.
The specific epithet of the scientific name is derived from the Japanese whale researcher Hideo Ōmura ( 大村 秀雄 , 1906-1993).
