Balalan ( Greek Πλατανισσός Platanissos ) is a village on the Karpas Peninsula in the north of the Mediterranean island of Cyprus and is located in the İskele district of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus . The place had 89 inhabitants in 2011.

Balalan is located on the Karpas peninsula, ten kilometers southwest of Yialousa / Yeni Erenköy and three kilometers northwest of Leonarisso / Ziyamet .

history

Balalan was already inhabited exclusively by Cypriot Turks before 1974 . Between 1964 and 1974, at the time of the Turkish administration of Cyprus , it was administratively part of the Turkish enclave of Mehmetçik and was an outpost of the enclave. The 1960 census counted 386 Cypriot Turks, compared to 260 in 1978.

The youth of the village migrated to the larger towns, so that the population continued to shrink. In 2006 there were 97 residents, in 2011 there were only 89. There is no longer a school in Balalan, the children of the village attend the school in Mehmetçik .
