Balangiga is a municipality in the Eastern Samar Province of the Philippines .
The site was the scene of an attack on the battalion stationed there during the Philippine-American War , which went down in the country's history as the Balangiga massacre . The retaliatory campaign that followed resulted in the death of 60,000 Samar residents and remains one of the most contentious issues between the United States and the Philippines over the war to this day.
