Salcedo is a municipality in the Eastern Samar Province of the Philippines . It has 22,532 inhabitants (August 1, 2015 census).
Geographical location
The northern barangays Caridad and Casilion form the border to the municipality of Quinapondan , while the barangays Alog and Buabua delimit the Salcedos area from the municipality of Mercedes to the south .
Along the Pacific coast there is a striking range of hills, which stretches from the Barangay Matarinao in the north of Salcedo to the southern tip of the island of Calico-an (urban area of Guiuan ).
Salcedo is located in a region of the Philippines that is experiencing strong seismic activity. More than two magnitude 5 earthquakes are measured annually. |
vegetation
The western coast of Salcedo, bordering the Gulf of Leyte , but also the Bay of Materinao in the north is heavily overgrown by mangroves . This is mainly due to favorable water conditions, such as permanently constant high water temperatures, shallow bank areas and little water movement.
The Pacific coast, on the other hand, is characterized by a rocky coastal area with a white sandy beach due to the strong waves and the low water temperatures.
climate
The average annual temperatures are between 30.5 ° C and 22.8 ° C. June to September are the months with the highest average temperature (between 32 ° C and 24 ° C), while January and March have the coldest average temperatures (between 28 ° C and 21 ° C).
The PAGASA Institute divides the Philippines into 4 types of climate. Here Salcedo falls under climate type IV, which means that no dry season can be identified. The period between December and February has a pronounced maximum of precipitation (up to 640 mm), while March and May have the least amount of precipitation (~ 180 mm). However, there is not a single arid month.
Population development
Since the 1995 census, Salcedo's population has increased from 16,026 to 16,971 (May 2000). The last census from August 2007 registered 18,680 inhabitants. Like many cities in the Philippine provinces, Salcedo is also acutely affected by rural exodus. In particular, many young people are moving to the next larger cities of Guiuan and Tacloban due to the hoped-for higher opportunities . However, Metro Manila and Cebu City are also popular destinations.
Barangays
Salcedo is politically divided into 41 barangays .
