Baleshare causeway

The Baleshare Causeway is a road embankment that connects the Hebridean islands of Baleshare and North Uist . It is part of a network of dams and bridges that connect the largest islands in the archipelago. It crosses with a length of about 350 m the North Ford sea road south of Clachan-a-Luib on North Uist and reaches Baleshare in the main town Samala .

The background to the construction project was the creation of a permanent connection between the small island of Baleshare and the larger North Uist. In conjunction with other dams, bridges and ferry connections, the transport infrastructure should be expanded in order to strengthen the economic area. Furthermore, the population decline on the smaller island should be contained by better connections. Other islands like Taransay and Scarp , which were not connected to the infrastructure, are now uninhabited. The Baleshare Causeway is attributed a significant part of the only moderate population decline on Baleshare. William Tawse Ltd. were entrusted with the construction and completed the dam in 1962. The single-lane road that runs over the dam is the only paved, permanent connection from Baleshare to another island.
