Ballangen is a place and a former Norwegian municipality in Fylke Nordland . The center of the former municipality was the place of the same name Ballangen about 40 kilometers south of Narvik . As part of the municipal reform in Norway , Ballangen and the north-eastern part of Tysfjord were merged with Narvik on January 1, 2020.

The municipality stretched from the Ofotfjord to the Swedish border and had a total area of ​​930.77 km². The number of inhabitants is around 2470 (as of January 1, 2019). The commune number was 1854.

Mining

The municipality was shaped by mining activities. These activities began in the 16th century with the mining of copper . The activities only lasted a few years. This was the first attempt to mine in Northern Norway.

The most important mining period began in 1911 and lasted until the pits were closed in 1964. Pyrite and copper ore were mined. Up to 350 people were employed in mining. The mining was carried out to a depth of 450 meters.
