Ballinacarriga Castle ( Irish Caisleán na Bhéal Carraige is, dt .: "mouth of the Rock"), a tower house from the 16th century, about nine kilometers east of Dunmanway in the west of Ireland County Cork . The castle is Irish National Monument with the number 425.
history
Ballynacarriga Castle is said to have been built by Randal Hurley in 1585 , as evidenced by the initials "RMCC" (Randal Murlihy Hurley and his wife Catherine Cullinane) including the year in a window ledge on the top floor. It is assumed, however, that the basic structures are older and originally belonged to the owners of the surrounding townland, the MacCarthys. The plant came to the Croft family in 1654 . Until 1815, the complex is said to have served both as a residence and as a chapel .
description
The approximately fifteen by twelve meter wide four-storey tower house on a rock ledge was previously secured by an additional bawn wall (Irish: bábhún) with four round corner towers; Remnants of it are still visible, especially in the northeast. Especially on the top floor there are several fine geometric stone carvings in the windows and arches. On the third floor, two small tourelles are built into the Tower House opposite .
There is now a school nearby.
Sheela Na Gig
The castle has a Sheela Na Gig on its east side, about halfway up.
