The metropolitan area Osnabrück is an urban conurbation in the southwestern Lower Saxony with 273,379 inhabitants (31 December 2011) km on an area of 424.48 2 . In addition to the core city of Osnabrück , which has 165,021 inhabitants (December 31, 2011), the conurbation also includes the municipalities of Belm , Bissendorf , Hasbergen , Georgsmarienhütte , Lotte and Wallenhorst with a total of 108,358 inhabitants (December 31, 2011). The fact that these communities were spared from being incorporated into the city of Osnabrück is due to its valley location, its geographical proximity to North Rhine-Westphalia, but also to local political considerations. It was feared that the majority in the city council could change.

While the number of inhabitants in the core city of Osnabrück is subject to strong fluctuations, the number of inhabitants in the remaining municipalities of the metropolitan area is increasing continuously.
