The Castle (Tower House)

In Ballyhack is a well-preserved Norman castle ( Tower House ), which was built around 1480. Occupied by Oliver Cromwell's forces during the Irish Rebellion of 1641, it served as a rallying point for those who were relocated to poorer areas such as Connacht .

In recent years it has been partially restored and is open to the public. You can see objects about the Crusades and the Normans as well as the dungeon and the prayer room.

Transport links

Ballyhack is one kilometer off the R733 regional road which links the town east to Wexford and north to New Ross . The R770 spur road leads into the village. For many hundreds of years there were only small boats transporting people to Passage East in County Waterford and back. Wagons and later cars had to take the long detour via New Ross. But since 1982 there has been a car and passenger ferry that connects these two places by shuttle service.
