Passage East
Passage East ( Irish An Pasáiste Thoir ) is a small town in County Waterford in Ireland with 644 inhabitants (2006). You can take a ferry across the funnel-shaped mouth of the Suir towards Ballyhack , Arthurstown in County Wexford . The passage is the shortest connection between Waterford and Wexford or Rosslare Harbor , from where the ferries to Wales and France depart. Compared to the route via New Ross , about 20% are saved.
The counterpart is the port Passage West near Cork .
history
A year after Richard de Clare landed in Bannow, which marked the beginning of the Cambro-Norman invasion of Ireland, he returned in 1170 with 200 knights and 1,000 men and ended up in Passage East.
Nearby are the ruins of the Geneva Baracks, a prison for thousands of rebels who were taken out of the country after the 1798 rebellion .
