Ballymarkahan Castle

Ballymarkahan Castle ( Irish Caisleán Bhaile Uí Mharcacháin ) is the ruin of a tower house in the municipality of Quin in County Clare, Ireland . The Irish antiquarian Thomas Johnson Westropp listed the castle in 1899 as one of the 195 "smaller castles" or Peel Towers in County Clare; at that time the Tower House was already in ruins. In the Ordnance Survey letters from John O'Donovan and Eugene O'Curry in 1839, Ballymarkahan Castle was mentioned as a ruin. It was also featured on the Ordnance Survey Map of 1842.

The castle dates back to the 15th century, sometime after the construction of the Quin Friary ; the MacNamara family , who have several castles in the area, e.g. B. the nearby Knappogue Castle , built, also had Ballymarkahan Castle built. According to Westropp, Domhnall, a son of Seán an Ghabháltais ("Seán, the Conqueror", † 1373) from the MacNamara family had the Tower House built in 1430.
