Knappogue Castle

Knappogue Castle ( Irish Gaelic : Caisleán na Cnapóige ) is a tower house in the parish of Quin in County Clare, Ireland . The building, erected in 1467 and expanded in the middle of the 19th century, has been restored and can be visited on guided tours.

history

The original castle was built by Seán Mac Conmara (or MacNamara ), son of Sioda MacNamara , in 1467; it is a good example of a late medieval tower house. Its name means in German "castle of the place full of small hills".

In 1571 the castle became the seat of the MacNamara (Mac Conmara) family, the Earls of West Clancullen . Donnchadh Mac Conmara was a leader in the Irish Rebellion of 1641, and Knappogue Castle remained in the hands of the MacNamaras throughout the Irish Confederation Wars of the 1640s. After the reconquest of Ireland (1649-1653), it was confiscated in accordance with the Advenutrers' Act and its new owner was Parliamentarian Arthur Smith.

Arthur Smith lived at the castle from 1659 to 1661. After the monarchy was reinstated in 1660 , Knappogue Castle was returned to the original MacNamara family. Francis MacNamara , High Sheriff of County Clare in 1789, later sold the castle to the Scott family from Cahiracon in 1800 , who subsequently undertook extensive restoration work and extensions. In 1837 the castle belonged to William Scott .

In 1855, Theobald Fitz-Walter Butler , 14th Baron Dunboyne , acquired the castle. It became the family seat of the Dunboynes. The family continued restoration work on the Scotts, adding a drawing room, long room, and west wing, as well as a clock tower and gate entrance. The renovation was carried out under the supervision of the architect brothers James and George Richard Pain .

During the Irish War of Independence (1919-1921), the county government of County Clare held their meetings at Knappogue Castle, where they were guarded by the East Clare Flying Column . Michael Brennan , commander of the East Clare Brigade , also used the castle as his headquarters during this period.

In 1927 the Irish Land Commission bought the estate from Knappogue and the castle came into the hands of the Quinn family , local farmers who abandoned it. In 1966, Houston , Texas, Texas-based Mark Edwin Andrews , formerly assistant SecNav , bought the castle and estate. He and his wife Lavonne , a well-known American architect, had Kappogue Castle extensively restored around 1969 together with the Shannon Free Airport Development Company (now Shannon Heritage ) and Bord Failte Eireann . They wanted to use the castle as a restaurant and private home.

The work ensured that the castle was largely restored to its 15th century condition, with later additions, witnesses of the castle's uninterrupted occupancy, being integrated and preserved. The Andrews later leased part of the castle for a symbolic lease to the Irish government as a cultural and tourist facility.

today

Shannon Heritage bought the castle in 1996. It now serves as a wedding and medieval banquet venue; guided tours are offered.

The 0.505 hectare garden, laid out in 1817, has been returned to its original state. The walls of the garden have been planted with climbing roses, grapevines and various types of clematis

There is also a whiskey called "Kanppogue Castle" made by the Castle Brands Company , which is currently bottling spirits from Bushmills .
