The Balzac Coffee Company GmbH & Co. KG is a Hamburg company that currently operates 49 cafés in 15 cities.
Companies
Balzac Coffee opened its first shop on May 2nd, 1998 in the Colonnaden in Hamburg. The founders were the Hamburg sisters Vanessa and Natalia Kullmann, who got to know the coffee shop concept during a professional stay in the USA . On July 13, 2011, Balzac Coffee merged with the World Coffee Company to form the Balzac Coffee Company.
The name of the chain alludes to the French writer Honoré de Balzac , who was known for his excessive coffee consumption of up to 60 cups a day.
In the summer of 2017, the Swedish chain Espresso House took over the company and named Nikolas Niebuhr as the new managing director, replacing Christian Schwake. Some Balzac branches have since been renamed and are now run under the Espresso House brand.
concept
In addition to filter coffee and espresso, the chain's shops also have a selection of different coffee and espresso specialties such as cappuccino, caffè latte and latte macchiato, teas and snacks , which can either be consumed on site or taken away. In summer there are frappé-like drinks (laccinos) in addition to the coffee specialties . The drinks are prepared according to the guest's order.
The interior design in warm colors and with large wall paintings is part of the corporate identity of the cafés.
criticism
In all branches there was camera surveillance in the customer area; the customers were not informed of this. With its judgment of April 8, 2008, the Hamburg District Court declared this practice to be unlawful. The manager then had the court explained that all cameras in the guest area would be dismantled within two months.
