Franz Löwy (born January 1, 1883 in Ostrau , Austria-Hungary ; died May 2, 1949, presumably in Rio de Janeiro ) was an Austrian studio and society photographer. His famous creative period lies between 1900 and 1938 with studios in Jägerndorf, Vienna, Paris and Karlsbad.

Live and act

Franz Löwy initially traveled through Europe and worked in Paris and other cities. In 1910 he opened a studio on Mariahilfer Strasse 17 in the sixth district of Vienna , which initially operated under the name "Titian". In the same year there was a studio at Rudolfstraße 18 in Jägerndorf in Austrian Silesia (today Krnov in the Czech Republic ). In 1916 he became a member of the Photographische Gesellschaft , and around 1918 of the Photographers' Cooperative in Vienna. From March 6, 1917, he was registered in Vienna, at Königsklostergasse 7/11, also in the sixth district. From 1919 onwards, he did not use the name "Titian" in the advertisement in Lehmann's business directory (edition: beginning of the year) and only operated under his own name.

As early as 1917 Peter Altenberg wrote : “Some people believe that you have to be dressed up at“ Goldman und Salatsch ”, get your“ lingerie ”from“ Wunderer ”and your photographs from“ Helene von Zimmerauer ”or“ Franz Löwy ”; All of this seems unnecessary in sleepless hours of the night . "

After the First World War, Löwy opened another studio at Lothringerstraße 20 in the third district of Vienna, which existed until 1927. During this time he also went to Paris , where he opened a branch. Another defeat was in Karlsbad . In the 1920s he began to photograph well-known artists and also published picture postcards from them. Other focal points were nude and dance recordings, in his studio he organized his own exhibitions, for example in 1920, 1922 and 1931, and was also represented at group exhibitions . In the following decade he also captured celebrities in photos and now also worked with oil and bromine oil printing for his portraits .

From his marriage to Rosa (* around 1888) the children Liselotte (* around 1910) and Marianne (* around 1915) emerged. He was registered in Königsklostergasse 7/11 until January 17, 1938. After Austria's annexation on March 12, 1938, he is registered as de-registered for Paris on July 18, 1938. From there he emigrated to Brazil. He and his wife Rosa were buried in Rio de Janeiro on the Cemitério de São João Batista .

Among other things, his photographs were shown in the exhibition Dance: Photo, curated by Monika Faber . Approaches and experiments 1880–1940 in the Austrian Photo Archive in the Museum of Modern Art (1990) and overseas. Escape and emigration of Austrian photographers 1920–1940 shown in the Kunsthalle Wien (1998).

Despite his prominent clientele, he is not involved with the k. u. k. Confusing court photographer Josef Löwy .
