The banana squirrel ( Callosciurus notatus ) is a mammal in the genus of the common fine squirrel that is found on various Southeast Asian islands.

features

The species reaches a head-body length of 15 to 22 cm and a tail length of 14 to 21 cm. The weight varies between 160 and 260 g. The fur on the top and the bushy tail are olive-gray in color. On each side of the body in adult specimens there is a conspicuous light gray line, which is flanked by a black line. The belly is bright orange.

Distribution and habitat

The distribution area of ​​the banana squirrel extends over the Malay Peninsula , Java , Sumatra , Borneo , Bali , Lombok as well as numerous small islands in the same region. The species was also introduced by humans on Salajar , south of Sulawesi . The squirrel can be found in the lowlands and in mountains up to 1500 meters high.

The habitat is formed by various dry or humid forests such as B. Mangroves . As a cultural follower , the banana squirrel can often be found in plantations or other urbanized regions.

Way of life

Banana squirrels are diurnal and mainly climb trees, bushes or other plants. They feed on fruits, tree bark and milk sap, and occasionally insects .

In contrast to most other real beautiful squirrels, this species often has smaller groups that communicate with different sounds. There are e.g. B. Cries of warning to draw attention to enemies. Females can mate year-round, but most young are born in spring and late autumn. Females usually mate with several males. After a gestation period of around 40 days, one to four young are born and spend their first few weeks in their mother's nest. After about six weeks, they will no longer be given breast milk. Wild banana squirrels are estimated to live 3 to 7 years. One specimen in human care was 9½ years old.

Dangers and Status

The species has various natural predators such as predators and snakes . If a snake poses danger, it can happen that individual groups attack and drive ( hate ) it.

Human activities do not have any significant negative effects on banana squirrels. As a culture follower, the population of the species even increases. The IUCN lists the banana squirrel as Least Concern .
