The Banco de Occidente SA ( German Bank of the West ) is a Colombian financial institution and, with its subsidiaries, is one of the largest banks in the country. It is part of the financial conglomerate Grupo Aval , Colombia's largest banking group, and is controlled by the country's second richest businessman, Luis Carlos Sarmiento . Sarmiento holds approximately 95 percent of the company's outstanding shares.
Corporate structure
The Banco de Occidente also includes the financial companies Fiduciaria de Occidente, Banco de Occidente (Panamá), Occidental Bank Barbados and Ventas y Servicios. Its seat is in Cali , in the west of the country, as the name translated "Bank of the West" suggests. The balance sheet total at the end of 2016 was $ 35.9 million.
Corporate development
Banco de Occidente began operating on May 3, 1965 . The first offices were opened in Cali , Palmira , Pereira and Armenia . In 1970 the bank had a network of 15 branches. In 1973, the bank began under the influence of Luis Carlos Sarmiento, who strengthened it with greater capital resources to position itself better nationally and internationally. At the end of 1976 the bank installed its own credit card system, Credencial . In 1980 the branch network was further developed so that regional offices could also be formed. By December of that year the bank had 80 offices, built up assets of 16,000 million pesos and equity of 1,875,000 million pesos.
In June 1982 June the bank opens its subsidiary Banco de Occidente (Panamá) . In June 1997 it inaugurated a new headquarters in the historic district of Cali, where the bank's general management is also concentrated, as well as the employees of the Southwest region, its subsidiaries and associated companies. On February 28, 2005 and October 2, 2006, administration and customer service were merged with Banco Aliadas and Banco Unión Colombiano .
