Bankston is an unincorporated community in Fayette County in the state of Alabama in the United States .

geography

Bankston is located in northwest Alabama in the southern United States. It is located approximately 55 kilometers east of the Mississippi state border and 45 kilometers southwest of the 733 square kilometer William B. Bankhead National Forest .

Nearby places include Berry (3 km east), Fayette (12 km west), Belk (23 km west) and Oakman (25 km east). The next larger city with 212,000 inhabitants is about 70 kilometers southeast of Birmingham .

history

Bankston was first settled around 1831. The first name of the place was Byler based on John Byler, who built the road here. When a water tank was built for the Georgia Southern Railroad in 1883 , the city was henceforth called Bank's Tank . In 1887 a post office was built and the place was henceforth called Bankston (from Banks and -town ). From 1873 to 1887, Bucksnort was the official name of the place, later it was changed back to the name we know today.

Bankston is located directly on US Highway 43 , which here in parts follows the same route as Alabama State Route 18 . Interstate 22 runs about 30 kilometers northeast .

About 14 kilometers northwest of the village is the airport of the city of Fayette, Richard Arthur Field .
