The roundabout in front of the Grand Hotel

Bantorget ( Swedish ; Bahnplatz ) is a park-like square in the southern Swedish city of Lund . It is located in the medieval city center, in the Centrala staden district , between the Grand Hotel in the east and Södra stambanan in the west. Here it is divided into two unequal parts by the Bangatan . Lund C train station is about 100 m to the north-west.

History and structure

The square was laid out in the course of the construction of the Södra stambanan in 1850 according to plans by CH Schlüschen and designed according to the model of Gustaf Adolfs torg in Malmö . In the 1870s, lilac arbors were laid out, lime trees were planted along the northern end to Klostergatan and on the west side to Bangatan . At the southern end there are horse chestnuts .

The square is dominated by the facade of the Grand Hotel, which was built between 1896 and 1898. The center of the square is a planted roundabout right in front of the hotel, which is surrounded by hornbeam hedges . Two diagonal paths cross the square, leading from the station area or the Trolleberg viaduct to the pedestrian zone in Lilla Fiskaregatan .
