Barbara Elisabeth Baarsma (born November 19, 1969 in Leiden ) is a Dutch economist and bank manager .

Career

Baarsma began studying product design at Delft University of Technology in 1988 . The following year she moved to the Universiteit van Amsterdam , where she completed her degree in economics with a Bachelor of Arts “cum laude” in 1993. In April 2000 she did her doctorate under the supervision of Jan Lambooy and Bernard van Praag at the university. She then stayed at the university and worked at the SEO Economisch Onderzoek business institute. After being promoted to deputy director in 2006, she took over as the successor to Jules Theeuwes , who was retiring for reasons of age, in November 2008. In 2009 she was also appointed full professor for market movement and competitive economics at the Universiteit van Amsterdam.

In 2016 Baarsma left SEO Economisch Onderzoek and took over the management of the basic department of Rabobank parallel to her professorship . With effect from January 1, 2019, she switched to operational bank management and took over the management of Rabobank Amsterdam , which sparked rumors about a possible successor to the cooperative group chairman Wiebe Draijer .

Baarsma has appeared as a consultant for various government and public institutions, and she is also a frequent guest on radio and television programs to comment on economic issues. Among other things, she was invited to expert commissions by the Dutch Minister of Health Ab Klink and his successor Edith Schippers .
