biography
As a teenager, Mason first worked as a songwriter . Her composition Yes, I'm Ready also made her known as an interpreter. She had other top hits in the 1960s with Sad, Sad Girl and Oh How It Hurts .
In the 1970s her lyrics became more direct, the music more funk- oriented - up to rap . With pieces like Give Me Your Love and From His Woman to You she reached the top of the charts again. In 1975 she sang several songs on the soundtrack for the blaxploitation crime thriller Sheba, Baby, by Monk Higgins and Alex Brown .
After Barbara Mason left the record label Buddha Records in 1975 , she only appeared in the charts occasionally. After all, Yes, I'm Ready , written by Mason, was back at the top of the US charts in 1980. A cover version by Teri DeSario and KC made it to number 2. Tom Sullivan had other smaller hits with this song in 1976 and Jeffrey Osborne in 2004.
In 2006 Mason received the Pioneer Award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation .
